Supreme Court Sticks It To The Gays, But In Texas We Found Some Hope.

One step forward, ten steps back. Welcome to Trump’s America.

It’s time to get real Divas.

Today’s decision by the Supreme Court in the case involving the Colorado baker who refused to create a custom cake for a same-sex couple comes as a blow to our community (and not the good kind).

In a 7-2 verdict, the majority opinion ruled that a civil rights commission in Colorado was hostile to Jack Philips, the owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Denver, while other bakers who also refused their services to LGBT clients were unaffected. [Feel free to head over to their Facebook page or Yelp and tell them what you think.]

It is important to note that while two of our liberal justices voted with the majority, our good Judy’s Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Sonia Sotomayor dissented. That’s why we love them!

But the Court did not answer the bigger question as to whether another baker, florist, etc. can discriminate against a same-sex couple based on their religious beliefs. Future cases before SCOTUS will most likely answer these questions.

While this defeat may hit us hard (again not in a good way), because June marks Pride Month (except by the current administration), we must unite and shout loud and proud. What can never be taken away is our voice, and perhaps the power of our purses.

We combed the internet to find pro-LGBTQ initiatives for business owners who welcome everyone, and where we landed was somewhat surprising: Texas.

That’s right ladies and gents, the Lone Star State. In the liberal island that is Dallas, Texas, we stumbled across the North Texas GLBT Chamber of Commerce who has an impressive roster of local businesses and corporate sponsors. Perhaps even more striking is that they have an initiative called the LGBT WE Zone.

According to their website, LGBT WE Zone is an initiative of the GLBT Chamber Foundation, the charitable arm of the Chamber of Commerce.

Available as either a window decal or counter sign, a business owner can let their customers know that they “Welcome Everyone” to their establishment, and it “assures patrons and potential customers that they are in a safe space; free of discrimination and prejudice.”

The best part? IT’S 100% FREE!!!

ORDER YOUR DECAL HERE.

We encourage our divas who own businesses, or who know business owners, to take a moment to order these awesome displays of equality and support our LGBT establishments across the country.
